LED Exit Sign
LED Exit Sign Information
Exit signs that use light emitting diode (LED) lighting strips to illuminate the term “EXIT” are referred to as LED exit signs. In recent years, this particular type of exit sign has witnessed an increase in popularity because of their cost-efficiency where electrical usage is concerned as well as their lifespan. Less than 5 watts of electricity is required to power these signs and they typically last between 8 and 10 years. Conversely, conventional exit signs that use incandescent lighting use 35 watts of electricity and will last four months at the longest.
Should the operational power be lost during a fire or natural disaster, the battery back-up system restores the power needed to operate LED exit signs and will be recharged when the electricity is on so they operate for a minimum of 90 minutes during a power loss. This meets NEC and OSHA requirements. Additionally, their rise in popularity has coincided with a lowering in their price. You will find that these exit signs have other applications including hazardous (explosion-proof) or wet locations.
Applicable regulations
There are a number of regulations that apply concerning the installation and use of LED exit signs including:
• mandatory installment is required whenever and wherever people are present
• they must be installed to point the way to an exit if it is not clearly visible
• there must be a high degree of contrast between the background and lettering
• the sign must be lit internally or externally with an artificial light source whenever people are present
• they must be bright enough so they are visible from 100 feet
• visibility of the sign must never be obstructed
• signs are required in corridors to point the way to an exit point
• any door that is not an exit point must be labeled “not an exit” or their function must be marked clearly
There is a lot that needs to be understood regarding LED exit signs.
