Before a business can obtain the proper licensing it is important to obtain clarification from the state fire marshal as well as healthy and safety. This is to create a safe environment for workers and customers alike. Before a business can be cleared for a license they must have an evacuation map drawn out and hanging where everyone can see, a fire extinguisher with signs pointing to it, fire alarms that have been tested and working, and the exit sign.
Most exit signs are square and say the word EXIT. However there are many variations that are not being approved by the U.S. Fire Marshall such as an image of a figure running out a door. The exit sign can be many different colors from green to blue but the most common color is a white background with red letters. In some cases the red letters light up. Past exit signs were made of metal and the letters lit up in red using one light bulb. The letters were etched in the cover so when it place the light would shine through the words "EXIT". Over the years it was determined that this method really didn't work because when a fire occurred the lights would most likely go out with the rest of the power and this made it impossible for individuals to see the exit signs.
The design of the sign has not changed that much but it has made a little more progress in being dependable and reliable when or if the power was to go out. Signs now come with a battery back up so the word "EXIT" still stays lit even if the power does go out. This required the batteries be checked regularly and to change them if possible. Exit signs are still used today in order to direct people to the right place. To know more about new york city emergency lights please visit
